IRISH Cup winners Crusaders have won the race to sign Lisburn Distillery’s high-rated midfielder Ryan McCann on a three-year deal.
The 26-year-old was reportedly being chased by a host of teams including Linfield and Coleraine but opted to sign for Stephen Baxter’s north Belfast side.
The combative midfielder has emerged as one of the Irish League’s finest players and will add fierce competition to a Crusaders side already laden with some of the country’s top midfielders in Aaron Black, Chris Morrow and Martin Donnelly.
McCann invoked a release clause in his contract following the controversial sacking of Paul Kirk at Ballyskeagh last month.
Kirk’s Nortel tipped for domination
JAMESIE Kirk’s Nortel are being tipped to romp the Amateur League’s 1A after the ex-Ballyclare Comrades manager swooped for a whole host of his former players.
Leading the exodus from the Dixon Park club is captain Stuart McClean, while ex-Comrades stars Darren McKay, who was with Dundela last season, and Gary Bell have also signed for the Monkstown club.
Nortel suffered their first ever relegation from the Amateur League’s top flight at the end of last season and have been in terminal decline since the departure of long-serving manager Ricky Beggs two seasons ago.
There were fears the Factory side could tumble further but the high-profile appointment of former Comrades boss Kirk, and the arrival of a whole glut of quality players from the Irish League club, have boosted hopes of an instant return to the Premiership.
Ferguson joins Whites revolution
Highly-coveted Irish League legend Glenn Ferguson has chosen Jimmy Brown's Distillery revolution for his career swansong.
The former Northern Ireland international, who was deemed surplus to requirements at Windsor Park just a few weeks ago, was inundated with offers from various clubs north and south of the border.
But the 39-year-old hitman, who has scored more than 500 career goals, opted to head for Ballyskeagh in what he insists will be his last season as a player.
Ferguson's arrival will more than make up for the loss of Curtis Allen, the Whites' 21-year-old striker who has invoked a release clause in his contract as he pursues his dream of full-time football.
Paterson eyes Premiership scalps
NORTHERN Ireland and Burnley striker Martin Paterson admits he's relishing the chance to terrorise some of the Premiership's big guns.
The Tunstall-born 22-year-old, signed by Clarets boss Owen Coyle as a replacement for Rangers-bound Kyle Lafferty last summer, fired 18 goals last season as Burnley secured promotion to England's top flight for the first time since 1976.
The former Scunthorpe United hitman made his debut for Northern Ireland in a memorable 3-2 win over Spain in a European Championship qualifier back in November and has moved through the ranks of the English League at breakneck speed, graduating from a spell on loan at Division One Grimsby two seasons ago to the Premiership in the space of a couple of years.
"I'm looking forward to testing myself in the Premiership," said Paterson. "I scored a few goals for Burnley last season and I can't wait to see how I do against some of the best defenders in the world."
